Chickens in the City

Did you know some cities allow chickens in the city, or some just don't have a law against it (NYC, for example)!

If you're in Fargo, fresh eggs could be awaiting you in your backyard.  (ordinances, see article 12-03)  With fair restrictions, they shouldn't be a bother to the neighborhood either.

What cities and towns have you heard of that allow the keeping of chickens?
Do you keep chickens or know anyone who does?  What's your experience with this concept?

  1. My husband and I wish so much we would have realized how awesome it would be to have backyard chickens before we decided to move to West Fargo - we easily could have had it all by just living in Fargo instead!! West Fargo does not allow chickens, even after trying to amend the ordinance this year. Grand Forks does allow backyard hens, as does St. Paul, Mpls, Madison, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco... We have friends right outside of Horace that raise chickens in their backyard and have developed great relationships with their neighbors because of it - who can pass up fresh eggs?!

  2. I grew up with chickens for part of my childhood and now on my own, we have 12 hens in the back yard, in Prosper! My husband and I love fresh eggs and enjoying getting them to people who enjoy them as well!

  3. We are planning a move to the Fargo area, but I would like to have some back yard chickens. I have been looking into the laws up there and am wondering what part of the town can we buy a house tha will allow back yard chickens. I have talked to someone at the health department and have looked online for laws and they all say that you can not have any farm animals unless the land is zoned A-Agricultural. Can any one help with some good information on this subject?
