What's your experience with a food coop?

Maybe you've never heard of it till now, maybe you've heard of it but never been to one, perhaps shopped at one, or were a dedicated member at a food coop. Tell us about your impressions of a food coop or your experience with a food coop and whether or not you liked it.

  1. I have been to the Wedge Food Coop in the cities. The first thing I noticed was seeing the wholesome food instead of all the advertising and fancy labeling I see in traditional grocery stores.

  2. I have never before been a member of a food co-op, but have shopped at some in other communities. I have always been impressed by the atmosphere - food co-ops are fun! Grocery shopping does not have to be a drudgery!

  3. When I was a child, my grandma was a member of a food co-op and I still have vivid memories of the wonderful fragrance of spices and the friendly atmosphere. It seemed to me like a group of friends shopping for groceries together. I remember going there to help my grandma work a few times (as it was a worker-owned co-op) and it was a fun experience for me. I have been interested and involved with cooperatives ever since.

  4. I have been to the Wedge in Minneapolis as well. Aside from the striking diversity and quality of produce, I was really amazed by how they treated their employees.

You are actually asked to take all of the items out of your cart yourself, to help prevent repetitive motion injuries for those working the check-out. It was great to see a business that cared about their employees just as much as their customers.

I also agree with Senator Mathern, there isn't much flash anywhere in the store. It's more about thoughtfully choosing your food than having visual sales pitches aimed at you.

  5. I've been to several community co-ops and love the experience. It's nice to have a clean, locally supported store that you have a vested interest in. I sincerely hope that we are able to support one here in the FM area, I LOVE to grocery shop, just not in Fargo right now, I have to go to several stores to get some of the stuff I like including (Breadsmith, Cash Wise, Hornbachers, Tochi, etc.) If we had a co-op, I could just go there and get all the stuff I like.
